The Jerusalem landmark Hansen Hospital was designed by renowned architect Conrad Schick at the end of the 19th century as a treatment center for people suffering from leprosy (Hansen's Disease). The complex includes a large central building as well as smaller structures scattered on the grounds, a large terraced garden and  wells. Over the years as medical technology advances a cure was found for the disease and the hospital closed in the year 2000.

Following the closure of the hospital the Jerusalem Municipality decided to convert the historic building into a digital arts and media center. After an extensive conservation and renovation process the Hansen building recently opened to the public and houses the Bezalel Academy of Art & Design graduate programs, as laboratories that bridge between the various disciplines of design, media and technology.

The building hosts artistic and cultural events on a regular basis that are open to the general public.
